  1. A lightning conductor is a device that 
  2. protects a tall building from lightning 
  3. strike by providing an easier path for 
  4. current to flow to earth than through the 
  5. building. It consists of a thick copper strip 
  6. of very low resistance that connects a metal 
  7. rod projecting above the building to the 
  8. ground below. A good connection to the ground 
  9. is essential and is made by burying a large 
  10. metal plate deep in the damp earth.
